Even if you and your partner were married in another state, your marriage will not be recognized legally in Nevada, under the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). With laws in place that do not protect same-sex couples' rights, many people face complex challenges in protecting assets and ensuring their wishes will be carried out in the event of a debilitating illness or death.
Nevada does has a registered domestic partnership law, which conveys many of the same rights as marriage, however, it is NOT a legal marriage, and has a number of limitations which should be considered before relying on this legislation to protect you and your partner. Additionally, even with a registered domestic partnership, you receive no recognition under Federal law.
